What is HypnoBirthing®?

HypnoBirthing is a philosophy and a technique that promotes instinctive birth and allows birthing parents to have a relaxing, comfortable, and stress-free birth experience. Using the core components of the technique – education, visualization, relaxation, self-hypnosis, affirmations, and breathing techniques – a birthing mother is able to achieve a calm, gentle birth, often without medication or intervention.

Who is suitable for HypnoBirthing®?

HypnoBirthing is for any mama out there who is interested in having a calm, gentle, and safe birth. Whether you are a first-time mom or a second, third, or fourth-time mom, this course is for you! If you have anxiety and worries about giving birth or perhaps you had a traumatic birth before and are looking for ways to have a different birthing experience, this course is perfect for you!

When should I take the class?

While you can take the HypnoBirthing course any time prior to giving birth, it is ideal to take it between 20-30 weeks so that you have as much time as possible to practice the techniques you will learn and to listen to the audio tracks you will receive.

What should I bring to class?

At this time, and for the indefinite future, all classes will be held virtually via Zoom. Given this, you will be able to participate in class from the comfort of your own home. You may want to have a blanket and a few pillows nearby so that you can get as cozy and comfortable as possible when we practice some of the exercises. You’ll also want to make sure you have the materials I send your way on hand – this will include the textbook and a spiral bound workbook.

Will I have a pain-free birth?

While HypnoBirthing does not guarantee a pain-free birth, or one that is totally free of discomfort or unanticipated incidents, it does offer birthing mothers the opportunity to explore the possibility of experiencing a birth that is free of fear or stress. When a mother is able to birth without fear, her body relaxes, endorphins are released, and she is able to birth more comfortably, generally in a shorter period of time.

Will I be unconscious during my birth?

This is one of the many misconceptions about HypnoBirthing. A mother will not be unconscious during her labor and birth; rather, she will be in a state of deep relaxation, listening to her body, and working together with her baby. Though she will be deeply relaxed, she is still alert and aware of everything going on around and within her.

Who can be my birth companion?

Anyone can be your birth companion or support person.

How will my birth companion be involved?

The birth companion is an integral part of the HypnoBirthing experience. One of their many roles as the birth companion is to help guide the mother into a state of deep relaxation. This is achieved through guided meditation readings, hypnosis prompts, relaxation and breathing techniques, deepening exercises, and hands-on comfort measures.

Will HypnoBirthing still benefit me if I opt for a medicated birth or if special circumstance arise requiring intervention or surgical birth?

Absolutely!! HypnoBirthing teaches mother’s how to view birth without fear or stress and to utilize various strategies to achieve a state of deep relaxation. One of the core elements of the program is teaching mothers how to prepare to accept any unexpected deviations from their birth plan in a calm and confident manner. These skills will be a benefit to a mother regardless of how she chooses to birth her baby – be that naturally, with medications, or a planned/un-planned C-Section.
